Different Dental Insurance Plans
There is a wide range of dental plans to choose from, all of which offer different levels of cover and have varying features. Some plans allow you to decide which dentist you would like to visit while others stipulate that you choose from a designated list of practices. Whatever you decide make sure the plan you choose is suitable for your needs and that you will not have to seek additional cover later on.
Indemnity dental insurance also known as traditional insurance, gives you the freedom to choose any dentist you want. It works by reimbursing the client for all or most of the cost of treatment depending on the terms agreed when the policy was taken out. Indemnity insurance works similar to regular health insurance with clients only having to occasionally pay a deductible. Certain procedures such as cosmetic dentistry may not be covered by this insurance and will have to be paid for by the individual. Monthly payments for these plans are higher than some as the entire cost of treatment is covered.
Discount health insurance plans offer a low cost alternative as the monthly fees are considerably less than indemnity insurance. A person with discount dental insurance will only be able to visit dentists who are participating in the scheme and will receive treatment at a discounted price. Discount dental insurance is a good alternative for those unable to get cover through their employer.

Dental reimbursement plans are an agreement between the individual and their employer where the employer agrees to reimburse the employee for any dental treatment up to a certain amount. The typical allowance for this treatment is around $1000 - $1500 per year. This is an attractive option for many as there are no monthly fees to pay. You are able to choose your own dentist and many procedures are covered by this plan.
HMO dental coverage stands for 'health maintenance organization'. This plan provides dental treatment through a network of dentists who agree to treat members of the insurance plan they are affiliated with. With HMO plans you cannot seek treatment from a dentist outside of the network; if you do this you will be responsible for the entire fee yourself.
PPO dental coverage is one of the most popular choices as it allows the patient to have more control over their treatment. PPO stands for 'preferred provider organization' and gives you the flexibility to visit any dentist you choose. There is however a network of dentists preferred by the insurance provider and you will receive better savings if you visit one of the dentists from their list.
POS dental insurance stands for 'point of service' and works in a similar way to a PPO dental plan. Patients are encouraged to visit a dentist in the insurance company's network and will face higher fees if they choose a dentist not approved by them. HMO, PPO and POS plans are generally low cost when compared with standard dental insurance and offer the added benefit of not having to pay your entire treatment cost upfront.
